Birdwatching is a wonderful way to spend your free time. It helps you step away from everyday responsibilities, relax, and discover nature from a closer perspective. If you live in Warsaw, you do not need to travel far to begin this adventure. The valleys of the Bug and Liwiec rivers are a true paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. Rent a house near Warsaw, bring your family and bicycles, and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Where Can You Watch Birds Near Warsaw? Three Scenic Routes

Kamieńczyk is a picturesque village surrounded by wild nature and located only around 60–70 km from Warsaw.

The Warsaw–Kamieńczyk route.

In these attractive surroundings, you can take a short walk, set off on a longer hike, cycle through the countryside, or combine birdwatching with a kayaking trip. Renting a house near Warsaw is a convenient option because it gives you more time for observations and allows you to experience the atmosphere of a place where nature plays the leading role.

Below are three routes that will help you discover the remarkable variety of birds living along the Bug and Liwiec rivers.

1. Kamieńczyk – Bug and Liwiec Route: A Longer Option for Active Nature Lovers

Difficulty level: medium
Length: approximately 20–25 km

This route requires more effort but rewards visitors with attractive landscapes and a broad variety of bird species. It starts in Kamieńczyk, near the place where the Liwiec flows into the Bug. Because of the distance, cycling may be more convenient than completing the entire route on foot.

The area is particularly valued by birdwatchers. Extensive meadows, river floodplains, and wetlands provide excellent conditions for many species to feed, rest, and breed. Several open areas along the route offer convenient viewpoints for observations.

During the trip, you may see:

  • lapwings nesting on wet meadows,
  • snipes hiding among tall grasses,
  • plovers moving along sandy riverbanks,
  • great egrets gathering in small groups.

If you want to spend the entire day outdoors, renting a house in Kamieńczyk is a practical solution. It makes it easier to plan observations at dawn and dusk, when birds are usually most active.

This is also a good idea for a weekend away from the city. Take a bird identification guide and a route map. A waterproof case for your phone or camera may also be useful, especially if you intend to go kayaking.

2. Kamieńczyk – Udrzyn Route: A Long Trip for Experienced Birdwatchers

Difficulty level: difficult
Length: approximately 40 km

The Kamieńczyk – Udrzyn route is the longest and most demanding of the proposed options. It follows the natural valleys of the Bug and Liwiec and is best suited to experienced visitors in good physical condition. Completing the route by bicycle is recommended.

Along the way, you will pass protected natural areas and places that are particularly important for migratory birds. These habitats provide safe spaces for resting, feeding, and nesting.

Birds worth watching for include:

  • white-tailed eagles flying over open areas in search of fish,
  • ospreys nesting high in the trees,
  • black storks that usually avoid close contact with people,
  • little stints and uncommon species of ducks.
The northern lapwing, or common lapwing — a medium-sized migratory bird from the plover family.

Part of the route may also be explored by kayak. Observing birds from the water allows you to approach their habitats quietly without creating unnecessary disturbance.

For a longer trip, bring high-magnification binoculars, a notebook for recording observations, enough food and water, and suitable outdoor clothing. Basic hiking equipment may also be helpful, particularly if you plan to stay outside for an extended period.

Combine Birdwatching with a Kayaking Trip

Kayaking is an excellent way to experience nature from another perspective. The Bug and Liwiec offer routes suitable for both beginners and more experienced paddlers.

Why combine birdwatching with kayaking?

  • you can reach places that are inaccessible on foot,
  • birds may be less disturbed when observed quietly from the water,
  • kayaking combines physical activity with relaxation,
  • you can organise either a short one-day trip or a longer journey.

Several rental companies in the Kamieńczyk area provide equipment and assistance with planning routes.
